War Maker is born from the true story of the Palestinian artist Karim Shaheen and accompanies the audience into the fragile landscape of his dreams, visions and disappointments. The stage becomes a resonance chamber for his memory. The performance is a multidisciplinary theatrical work intertwining visual art, new media, documentary theatre and object theatre. Through these languages, Karim’s life takes shape as a path broken by exile and constantly crossed by war.
But wherever Karim goes, in every country he passes through, a war always seems ready to break out. From this comes the question that runs through the performance from its very title: was he perhaps the one carrying war with him? Was he the War Maker?
Dafa – an Arabic word meaning “warmth” – is a project founded in 2009 with the aim of reaching refugee communities in Jordan. In 2015, two artists graduated from the DAMU Academy of Performing Arts co-founded Dafa Puppet Theatre, an award-winning theatre company based in Prague. Dafa combines principles of physical theatre, puppet theatre, musical theatre and multimedia, creating original productions that merge fiction and documentary. For Dafa, theatre is a public practice, a tool for expression and communication.
