YES/NO is a playful, interactive and virtuosic exploration of the theme of consent. The performance begins like a celebration of radical positivity, expressed through dance: joyful, enthusiastic, spectacular. Then comes the No: a word worth practising, because it is often so difficult to say it out loud. From there, things become more complicated. Between the black-and-white clarity of Yes and No opens a grey sea of ambiguity: I’m not sure, Yes and no, Maybe... The kaleidoscopic choreography transforms the simplest ingredients into fascinating and complex structures, crossed by physical presence, pulsating rhythms, poetry and pleasure.
Swiss-American choreographer Joshua Monten was born near New York City. He studied literature and cultural anthropology at Duke University before approaching dance at the age of 20. As a dancer he worked for Bern Ballett and the Heidelberg State Theatre. In 2012 Joshua Monten founded his company, which over the years has performed hundreds of times in international festivals and theatres. Among the institutions that commissioned choreographic works from him are Ballet National du Rhin, Opéra National de Lorraine, the State Theatre of Nuremberg, Gdańsk Dance Festival, Konzert Theater Bern, Zentrum Paul Klee and Art Basel.
