EMERSON ENIGMA is the intimate, free and visionary tribute that Thierry Eliez dedicates to Keith Emerson, founder of Emerson, Lake & Palmer and legendary figure of English progressive rock. The project was born from a profound admiration, which over the years also led to the meeting between Thierry Eliez and Keith Emerson in Los Angeles and to the beginning of a friendship. From that bond emerges a concert that blends pieces taken from the albums of Emerson, Lake & Palmer and The Nice. From Knife-Edge to Tarkus, from The Endless Enigma to Pictures at an Exhibition, Emerson’s music dialogues with Janáček, Bach, Mussorgsky and with the living energy of jazz.
Far from being a simple reinterpretation of Keith Emerson’s work, Thierry Eliez opens the doors to an enigmatic, lush, avant-garde and deeply singular universe. Keith Emerson was the pianist and composer who first dared to integrate concertante forms into his own works. His audacity conquered entire generations of young people around the world.
It is this enigma that Thierry Eliez chooses to cross and unveil with this project.
Virtuoso pianist and born improviser, Thierry Eliez is one of the great masters of French jazz. He has performed in more than 5000 concerts across over 40 countries, collaborating with some of the most important names on the international scene. During his career he has collaborated, among others, with Dee Dee Bridgewater, Aretha Franklin, Toots Thielemans, Jaco Pastorius, Magma, as well as composers Michel Legrand and Éric Serra, who did not hesitate to consecrate him as one of the “greatest improvising pianists in the world”.
