It is not easy to be straight. As if we were watching Sisyphus tirelessly pushing his stone from his feet to the top of the mountain, Linearity shows us the fascinating and interminable feat of imposing linearity on an irregular world. Armed with rolls of coloured tape, two vigorous and ambitious dancing bodies restructure their surroundings by creating straight lines in the most unthinkable places. How straight do we really want to be? How many curves are we able to handle? The choreography seeks answers to questions that end up being surprisingly personal. The duet Linearity boasts an interchangeable cast of performers with multiple gender identities. It has been created to be performed almost anywhere, indoors or outdoors, day or night and is suitable for both adult and children audiences.
Swiss-American choreographer Joshua Monten was born near New York City. He studied literature and cultural anthropology at Duke University before turning to dance at the age of 20. As a dancer he worked for the Bern Ballett, the Heidelberg State Theatre. In 2012 Joshua Monten founded his own company, which over the years has performed hundreds of times at international festivals and theatres. Institutions that have commissioned choreographic works from him include the Ballet National du Rhin, the Opéra National de Lorraine, the Nuremberg State Theatre, the Gdańsk Dance Festival, the Konzert Theater Bern, the Zentrum Paul Klee and Art Basel.
