The tale of the Teatro Veneto at the end of the millennium is the ideal continuation of Nicola Mangini's famous story: Between 1998 and 2000, Carlo Manfio, scholar and dreamer, on a regional commission, in a frenzied tour of oral interviews, strips of archives and press reviews that are now unobtainable, collected an enormous amount of material that, however, remains unpublished; now, eight years after his death (2016), heirs and friends remember him with a book that restores that ‘theatrical journey’, together with an initial biography of the author, testimonies and minor unpublished works. The value of the publication, however, goes beyond the historical aspects (documents and information that are inaccessible today, and perhaps even in the future), because it photographs the theatre in Veneto during thirty years of great transformations - the painful founding of a public theatre, the great movementism and affirmation of Teatro Ragazzi, the physical recovery of the most important historical theatres, the birth and internationalisation of research - that still question us today about our regional theatre system and its developments.

The presentation of this book thus also gives us the opportunity to reflect on the situation of the Veneto Theatre (and beyond) today. This is why we have invited various artists and cultural operators in the area to reflect on memory and the present. What traces of yesterday's theatre remain visible in today's theatre? What has changed in the practice and thought that has passed through the theatre of these years, and in particular that which has tried to innovate language, which is then the theatre that our Festival has always tried to present? What has changed in the personal journey of artists and, more generally, what role did and does the stage occupy within the society that hosts and produces it? What are the prospects for young theatre appearing on the stage today?
