Europe, white-haired, sits in the theater to enjoy the spectacle of the Conquest. How much more evil and obsolete at the same time. The screen, the theater, the lens and the mirror expose the contradictions of the gaze, of representation, of art, the idea we make of ourselves and the problem of the other. The mirror that reflects sends back, like a Gorgon, the double image of an absence of meaning and of shame. The colonizer is petrified, there on the shore of a new world, incapable - or capable only of looking at himself - inadequate for the encounter. The film is not a concert film, nor the film of a theatrical production, it is rather a sort of making of, a factory of representation, a documentary of the imagination. And in producing itself it reflects on itself and doubts itself like a ship that ploughs through the abyss. In this the film is and is not a work on the work of Rameau. THE GALANT INDIES are almost an accident, but a luminous and surprisingly revealing accident. The title of the film is taken from a passage of the Requerimiento, a 16th-century Spanish document read publicly to the natives, in the presence of a royal official, but in the absence of interpreters, so that the ownership of lands and people could be stated, almost a staging of the law, an aberrant and perverse version of it. The document ends with an explicit threat: if the natives did not accept the requests of the Crown and the Church, the Conquistadores would do them “...all the harm possible”.
