Abu under the sea is born from a photograph that pricks me, that of a child inside a suitcase passed through x-ray at the customs in Ceuta. The show is that child’s version of the journey he has gone through, how he imagines things have gone or how they could have gone. A child in a suitcase is a limit, a boundary. There is a film about the concentration camps called "The Child in the Suitcase", and I think that there is something deeply contiguous in the epochs where children have to be hidden. Abu is like the baby in the suitcase in the Nazi camps, like a child who has come back to hide in his belly and looks bad outside. It is also Pinocchio who goes to save the father in the belly of the whale or Ulysses hiding inside a wooden horse. What I am interested in is seeing if that child chooses to escape from reality to take refuge in fantasy, understanding how much his journey makes him a man, and what a man he becomes. I am interested in hearing his questions because he does the right ones, those that bring to view the tragedy we have before our eyes every day but that we do not always see.
