Caligola is the new production of Teatro del Carretto, signed for the first time by Jonathan Bertolai, former assistant director of Maria Grazia Cipriani, artist of the Company since 2006 and since 2018 also its president. The desire that guided the study of this new project, freely inspired by Albert Camus' Caligula, was born in spring 2019, well before the pandemic that struck us and found new reasons for urgency in these months. The choice of this work stems from the need to investigate the world of youth with its fragility and existential malaise in relation to the future, themes, particularly the latter, that are now proving to be even more burningly topical, grafting themselves onto a panorama characterised by global uncertainty in economic, political and cultural terms, as well as in terms of health.
‘I am certain, and so are you, that the impossible would have been enough for me’ says Caligula: in an absurd world, in which the new generations have to win their right to exist and emerge, from a context that is completely unfavourable to them.
The meeting between director Maria Grazia Cipriani and stage designer Graziano Gregori gave birth to the Teatro Del Carretto in 1983. Since then the Company has been based in Lucca, at the Teatro Del Giglio, and carries on a visionary research between the inner journey, the dream and the concrete theatrical work that associates the most beloved dramaturgy such as Shakespeare's and the mythological and fabulous marvellous.
Jonathan Bertolai began his collaboration with Teatro Del Carretto in 2006, working as an actor in the main productions. In 2019, he conceived the auteur theatre review Altre Visioni, at the Teatro del Giglio in Lucca.
