An idea by Massimo Munaro
The idea was born during the long and difficult months of lockdown, locked in his home, away from the theater room, friends and work colleagues, with the prospect of being out of the scene for who knows how long. For our shows, which are known to involve the viewers' senses directly, it seemed that this time would never come again. "Nothing would be as before" they pontificated, in long marathons on zoom illustrious theater directors, directors, actors, trade union representatives.... In short, the majority of the actors seemed to orient themselves, who with resignation who with poorly concealed enthusiasm - on the ministerial line that announced that soon, to solve all the problems, would soon launch a Netflix theater - that the inevitable way for the survival of the theatre was to transfer it (temporarily?) on digital platforms. And so for months and months the actors have been competing to fill the ether with videos, promos, shows, statements, interviews, etc.
In those months of forced solitude, on the contrary, I thought that I would like - given the impossibility for spectators to leave home - bring directly the theater under their windows or directly in front of or inside their homes. The simple idea is that if you can’t go to the theatre then the theatre comes to you. Not in video, not with a simulacrum of image, but with an actor in the flesh: because the theatre is either present or simply not.
Immediately I thought of Pessoa... One multitude. After all, we were for months just that thing: a multitude of solitudes, a collective where everyone was isolated and alone. Breaking this isolation - this "social distancing" - for a moment was the right thing to do. And I felt that it would be important to try to do so with poetry, which was perhaps the thing that was most lacking in our tiring daily lives. I also thought it would be nice not to make performances but to conceive the actions to carry as small poetic acts, gifts, a small bouquet of verses to give to the viewer.
I also decided from the beginning that it would be necessary to make this event for once not with the actors of Lemming, but as a small form of support and recognition, with other actors, mostly of the city, Cut off in these months from economic support or social buffers. With each of them we have agreed a poem by Fernando Pessoa that everyone will interpret freely. Each actor will travel to a different house in the city. The event lasts a few minutes and our intention is to replicate it, even in a one-to-one relationship, for as many citizens as possible.
Now it’s your turn, viewers, to welcome the small opportunity to invite a city actor in the courtyard, under the windows or in the living room of the house, for a short and brief meeting that gives us back for a moment, with a smile, the bittersweet taste of theater.
