The idea for U* stems from learning about an event that took place in Canada in November 2016: the birth of Searyl Doty, the first child in the world whose health card mentions an indeterminate sex, ‘Undetermined’. Learning of this event was the reason for research into the development of sexuality from prehistoric times to the present day, revealing an astonishing regression from how gender identity and sexuality were perceived, represented and manifested thousands of years ago. This research was followed by an analysis of the cultural processes behind the creation of labels that we use today to communicate, name, and define sex and gender. Digging deep into the etymology of words, we questioned ourselves on the origin of the most abused terms, on man's atavistic need to name things in order to be able to communicate, with the quasi-scientific objective of unveiling the potential of language outside of an over-structured social context rich in legacies.
CRiB was born in 2017 from the shared passion of Beatrice Fedi (performer and actress), Roberto Di Maio (director) and Carolina Ciuti (art historian and curator) for theatre, visual arts and performance in general. With a fluid structure, CRiB's projects materialise in the form of theatrical proposals, performances conceived for the urban space or museum context, video and sound works, and shared reflections in which the spectator becomes the first protagonist. Finally, the group's proposals are the result of the conviction that art is a necessary vehicle for the creation of dynamic spaces in which to reflect the time we inhabit.
