A poet and playwright, ‘one of the few, perhaps the only mythical writer in circulation’ (Belpoliti), ‘the protagonist of some of the most vivid and visionary experiences of recent years’ (Celati), ‘one of the rare few worth reading’ (Portinari), with his participatory actions in neighbourhoods, schools, villages, asylums, he has marked a radical turning point in the way theatre and writing are practised in the fabric of the community.
His books of poetry include: Padrone & Servo, Il poeta albero, Opera della notte, Il tremito, Canti del guardare lontano, Canti brevi; For the theatre: All'improvviso & Zip, Commedia armoniosa del cielo e dell'inferno, Teatro nello spazio degli scontri, Il Gorilla Quadrumàno (collective writing), Fantastica visione, Il Diavolo e il suo Angelo, Teatro con bosco e animali, Gloria del teatro immaginario, Visioni di Gesù con Afrodite, L'insurrezione dei semi; Novels: At the End of the World, Letters to a Wolf, Lorenzo and Cecilia, and the quadrilogy consisting of Nane Oca, The Sister Forests, Nane Oca Revealed, The Dark Side of Nane Oca. He has received, among others, the Pirandello Prize, the Ubu Prize (2005 and 2015), the Grinzane/Giardini Hambury Prize for Lettere a un lupo and, for Nane Oca, the prestigious Brunacci Prize.
For thirty years he taught dramaturgy at DAMS University of Bologna.
