Husam Abed was born and raised in the Baqa’a refugee camp, the largest Palestinian camp in Jordan. The audience sits around a table while the performer prepares food and narrates the story of his family’s diaspora. His storytelling is both captivating and evocative, unfolding against the backdrop of the region’s political events. Through soulful music and poetic use of objects, the performance brings us closer to a seemingly distant reality. The narrative is enhanced by video projections, photographs, maps, and “recycled” raw materials—tin cans, wire, paper, wood, grains of rice—along with the power of authentic storytelling. Abed speaks aloud, whispers, bangs his fist on the table, sings, and dances. We listen to stories of a life and experiences far removed from our everyday world. Around the table, art blends with life, creation with realism. Through tales of his personal and daily existence, Abed crafts an atmosphere that engages all the senses.

Dafa—an Arabic word meaning “warmth”—is a project born in 2009 with the aim of reaching refugee communities in Jordan. In 2015, two artists graduated from the Academy of Performing Arts (DAMU) co-founded Dafa Puppet Theatre, an award-winning theatre company based in Prague, Czech Republic. The company produces stage performances and short films, and is regularly invited to international festivals across Europe, Southeast Asia, the Arab world, and the United States. Dafa combines principles of physical theatre, puppetry, musical theatre, and multimedia, creating original productions that blend fiction and documentary. For Dafa, theatre is a public practice—a tool for expression and communication.
