In 2009, deeply affected by Israel’s devastating military campaign "Operation Cast Lead" in Gaza, Caryl Churchill wrote this short theatrical piece composed of seven parts. These are seven dialogues by adults, each referring to a young girl across different moments in history—from the Nazi persecutions to the creation of the State of Israel and the bombings of Gaza. A poetic and unsettling text, both a whisper and a scream, it places childhood at the center—as scapegoat, as innocent witness, or as a pretext for the decisions of adults. Seven dialogues cross through time. In each, an adult speaks to a child. The historical context changes, but the gaze remains the same—focused on childhood, a fragile target and a mirror of others’ will.

Caryl Churchill, born in London in 1938, began her career in the early 1960s with radio dramas marked by anti-bourgeois themes. She is today considered the most important and widely performed living English playwright.

Andrea Adriatico, founder of Teatri di Vita in 1993, is a theatre and film director, and professor of cinema at the Academy of Fine Arts in Lecce. Through his works, he explores the urgent issues of contemporary times, engaging with politics, uprootedness, rights, and gender, and staging authors such as Pasolini, Beckett, Mishima, and Copi.
